Monday Maths
Part of what we do for Maths on a Monday is to learn a new game for our games box. This Monday we learnt Frolicking Frogs. Frogs eat flies even at Maths time! Frolicking Frogs is a memory game where you have to match the picture of a number (place value blocks) with the numeral. We thought we had better practise making each number with place value blocks before we started. We worked together in groups. When we got to 20, lots of clever thinkers realised they could go to the swap shop. Rather than get a wiggly one to make 19 into 20 they swapped what would have been 10 wiggly ones for one block of ten.

We are big fans of F! F is fun, fantastic and definitely fabulous!

FROGS EAT FLIES!

Tristan became the teacher today. He taught us how to make origami frogs to catch our pesky flies. We used white paper while we are learning. When we get better we will break out the special green paper!

OLYMPIC HOCKEY DAY

On Tuesday, A5 had the special privilege of representing Cornerstone Christian School (and Japan) in an Olympic Hockey Day put on by Hockey Manawatu. Samuel summed up the day well in his story when he wrote "It was tiring but it was fun at same time".
We had an opening ceremony and a closing ceremony. We got to lead the other countries around the turf. Amber was chosen to raise the Olympic flag in the opening ceremony. That was a bit of an honour!

We played hard! We even played against each other in one round! We were good sports.

Other fun things the day included were listening to a former hockey Olympian - Tara Drysdale and a tug-of-war against other countries.

We're off! JAPAN HERE WE COME!!!!!!

JAPAN

We are studying Japan this term. Professor Von Krum (Mrs Forrest's crazy statistician cousin from Sweden) heard about this and left us an envelope with a plane ticket to Japan! We only had 3 sleeps to get our documentation in order.




Last Friday afternoon, we packed our bags for our 2pm flight. We were ready to take on Japan with our passports in hand.

We watched the Qantas safety video diligently, enjoyed the take off, the roar of the engine and rising above the clouds. The in-flight refreshments were scrumptious and our flight attendants were very kind. We had regular messages from the pilot as well. As we landed in Tokyo airport we noticed with our birds eye view that the land looked a little different to New Zealand's... but exactly how different? We will find out!

This girl knows that she is not more than anyone else but also, that she is not less important. People like this are so peaceful to be around. Time with our stunning Azaria is just delicious.

CONTRACTION SURGERY

Safety warning: Do try this at home.

Today we performed contraction surgery. There were some close calls but most operations were successful without any complications or fatalities.

We were happy to see our old friend APOSTROPHE this week. We learnt about him last term when he was being pretty possessive!

This week we looked at his other job - stealing letters and gobbling them up! He goes where he's gobbled aka 'the cut'.

We've learnt that a contraction and its original two words, for example, 'I am' and 'I'm', are like a worm. They're the same worm, they mean the same thing, but one form is the extended worm and the other is the worm contracted. Like when a worm moves... extend, contract, extend, contract. Same worm, different forms.

Getting into our scrubs...

Ready for the operating theatre, surgical scissors and band aides in hand. A test run on "that is". These doctors look a little intense!


Time to operate...

The surgeon's added an apostrophe up the top on the cut and... a great job done doctors!
